Balfour Hospital

The Balfour Hospital in Orkney, delivered for NHS Orkney in 2019, was designed with sustainability at its core, claiming to be Scotland’s first net-zero hospital. It’s energy strategy significantly reduces environmental impact by eliminating reliance on fossil fuels for daily operations. The facility uses electric air to water heat pumps for hot water and heating, along with mechanical heat recovery to minimise energy demands. Kerosene boilers provide back-up heating, and the site is supported by emergency oil generators. A 1,200 m² array of solar panels further offsets electricity demand, harnessing Orkney’s natural resources to maintain patient comfort even in low temperatures.

Beyond energy efficiency, the hospital reduces patient travel to mainland Scotland, cutting associated emissions. The design prioritises local culture and ecology, using simple, robust materials suited to Orkney’s climate and heritage. Construction maximised local labour and resources, supporting the community economically while addressing logistical challenges of the remote location.
