Our interactive map lets you discover Orkney energy innovation, spanning from the Neolithic to modern renewables, which have all been brought together for the first time to form the Orkney Energy Trail.

Access & facilities

This guide maps out the locations of some of the key sites that make up Orkney’s unique energy story over the eras. While we’re rightly proud of Orkney’s innovations in this sector and are keen for visitors to understand how the industry has developed, the nature of the work means that a number of sites cannot easily be visited. Many are working sites and are included here simply to help you understand our history and our plans for the future.

Please feel free to note the sites as you explore Orkney, but do not attempt to visit unless the trail indicates that you can do this, and please be aware that there are currently no guides to accompany visits at any of the sites. Because of this, this website acts as a reference guide rather than a visitor attraction guide.

On the trail

To get around Orkney there are a range of options for your transport needs, from public transport to taxi services and private car hire. Visitors can view the Orkney Public Transport Guide at Orkney Islands Council for bus and ferry timetables as well as other local travel info.

Guide to being a responsible visitor

Please be a responsible visitor to help protect the environment and others

  • Pick up litter, take it home with you or use any nearby bins.

  • Keep your dog on a lead around farmland and livestock and clean up after pets too.

  • Avoid lighting fires or BBQs on moorland or in the countryside and if you do have a BBQ or bonfire on a beach, please clean up afterwards.

  • Stick to designated walking and cycling routes when you're out exploring and be respectful of private property.

  • Use gates where they're provided and, if they're closed when you find them, close them again after passing through.

  • Avoid disturbing natural flora, fauna and wildlife habitats.

  • It's always worth reading up on the Scottish Outdoor Access Code before exploring Orkney.
